Active Schools

January 11th 2016

We have just had our accreditation visit-the final step towards our Active flag.

Our visit went extremely well.

Mr. O Callaghan was very impressed!!

Firstly, he met with Miss Ryan and Mrs Hayden to discuss the whole process.

Next, on to our Infants where he observed how well our Infant Fit Club runs every Friday.

He watched Ms Power’s Active Assembly and learned even more about how our Active School operates.

He was extremely impressed with Ms. Kavanagh’s 6th Class, who provided him with an amazing gymnastics display.

We showed him around the school where he got to see the Infants on their balance bikes.

He was really impressed with all the playgrounds and school grounds.

Finally, he met with our Active Committee who were super ambassadors for the school. They spoke very well and outlined everything that makes our school such a deserving recipient of an Active Flag!

Mr. O Callaghan gave a special mention to our school website-‘ a fantastic, up to date, accessible website which offered a great insight to active life in St. Ursula’s’.

Well done and many thanks, Mrs Kiely.

A big thank you to Yvonne Lyons for taking the time to come and speak to our visitor on behalf of the parents.

Well done to everyone involved -you did yourselves and the school proud

We await news of our Active Flag………..

Active Schools Update January 2016

Work is continuing towards our first Active Flag. The Active committee met to discuss the upcoming events for 2016.

We are aiming towards an even fitter, healthier school in 2016.

6th classes have pledged to get fit in 2016. They plan to run for at least 10 minutes every Friday before lunchtime.

The Active Committee are spreading the word to other classes in the hope this catches on.

We, as an active school, would love to get everybody out running at least once a week.

Classes are continuing to work with the Fit 4 Skool programme.

We are ‘Stepping it Up’ in conjunction with Operation Transformation.

Infant Fit Club continues every Friday with the help of the Sports Captains.

Balance bikes have arrived to the school and the Infants are eager to get started.

1st Classes are busy with their Zumba classes.

2nd -5th Classes are dancing to the Sid Shuffle and Stepping it Up.

Camogie is beginning for the 5th classes.

Basketball continues very Thursday after school for the Senior Squad.

We have submitted our Active Flag application and await an accreditation visit some time soon.

We look forward to letting you know how we get on. We think we are well ready and deserve our very own Active Flag.

All in all, a great start to 2016. Here’s to making it a fit, healthy one!!!

Get moving……..

Active Schools Update October 2015

Work is continuing towards our first Active Flag. The Active Committee are very busy these days. We have been meeting every Wednesday at lunchtime to discuss important events in our school. We have been focusing on our Health Eating policy.

The committee surveyed each class group in the school. They looked at the eating habits throughout with some very interesting results. The younger classes were extremely good at sticking to the healthy eating policy of our school, only bringing a small treat on a Friday. As we got to the older classes, things were a little worse with many girls bringing muffins, chocolate and other unhealthy foods every day for lunch.

The Active Committee have published their results in the form of a graph. This is displayed on our Sports Notice Board for all to see. They have set out to improve eating habits in our school, particularly in the senior end. They will visit the classes once a week to remind the girls of our healthy eating policy. The committee will carry out the same survey again after 6 weeks and compare the results.

Our message is clear: we are a fit, healthy, active school!!

This year St. Ursula’s school is working towards our first Active Flag. As you are aware, we are a very active school. We are involved in so many different sports & activities. In applying for this flag, we hope to showcase everything we do in our school.

We have set up our Active Schools Committee who have been busy since September. We are currently designing posters & working on projects about being healthy & active.
